Microcement applied over existing tiles in Ireland

Can You Apply Microcement Over Existing Tiles?

Yes — and it is one of microcement's most powerful advantages for Irish renovations. No tile removal, no skip hire, no weeks of disruption.

Yes — microcement can go over tiles.

This is one of the most common questions we receive, and the answer is a clear yes for the vast majority of situations.

Why This Matters for Irish Renovations

Tens of thousands of Irish homes have tiled bathrooms, kitchens and floors that are dated, stained or simply not to the homeowner's taste. Traditionally, changing the look meant removing the tiles — an expensive, disruptive and wasteful process that generates significant debris and can damage the underlying substrate.

Microcement changes this equation completely. Because it is only 2-3 mm thick and bonds exceptionally well to ceramic and porcelain surfaces with the correct primer, it can be applied directly over existing tiles — transforming a dated tiled bathroom into a seamless, contemporary space in a matter of days, not weeks.

This makes microcement particularly popular in Irish renovation projects. There is no skip hire, no tile removal crew, no risk of damaging the floor structure, and the project takes a fraction of the time. The Application Process Over Tiles

01

Tile Assessment

Every tile is tapped to check for hollow spots. Loose or cracked tiles are repaired or removed and replaced before any microcement work begins. Grout joints are filled to ensure a level surface.

02

Cleaning and Priming

The tile surface is thoroughly cleaned, degreased and any polish abraded. A specialist tile-bond primer is applied to ensure strong adhesion of the microcement to the tile surface.

03

Microcement Application

A thin scratch coat is applied first to fill the grout texture and create a level base. Then one or two finish coats of microcement are applied with a steel trowel to achieve the desired texture and colour.

04

Sealing

Two coats of polyurethane sealant are applied to provide waterproofing and durability. In shower and wet areas, a tanking membrane may also be applied beneath the microcement for additional protection.

When It Works Perfectly

  • All tiles are firmly fixed with no hollow spots
  • Tiles are ceramic or porcelain in reasonable condition
  • No active damp, moisture or efflorescence behind tiles
  • Surface is flat and not excessively uneven
  • You want a seamless, grout-free finish
  • You want to avoid tile removal disruption
  • Shower or bathroom tiles that are stained or dated

When Tiles Should Be Removed First

  • Multiple loose, hollow-sounding or cracked tiles
  • Evidence of moisture or damp behind the tiles
  • Highly uneven tile surface that would telegraph through
  • Tiles with large, deep grout lines that cannot be adequately filled
  • Tiles showing signs of movement or flexing
  • Mould growth behind or between tiles

Cost Saving vs Full Retile

One of the most compelling practical arguments for microcement over tiles is cost. Here is a realistic comparison for a typical Irish bathroom renovation:
