Microcement Walls in Ireland
Walls are one of the most versatile applications for microcement — and one that is growing rapidly across Irish homes and commercial projects. Whether you want to create a dramatic feature wall in a living room, transform a bathroom from floor to ceiling or fit a seamless kitchen splashback behind the hob, microcement gives you a finish that no other material can replicate.
Cementec Ireland supplies microcement specifically formulated for wall application. Our wall-grade product has a slightly higher flexibility to accommodate the natural movement of plasterboard and masonry walls without cracking over time.
Because microcement walls are only 2-3 mm thick, they can be applied over existing painted walls, plasterboard or even tiled surfaces without any significant alteration to the room dimensions. This makes microcement the ideal choice for renovation projects where disruption and timescales are a concern.
Benefits of Microcement on Walls
Seamless Surface
No joints, no grout lines, no visible transitions. Microcement creates a completely uniform wall surface that elevates any room.
Waterproof When Sealed
Sealed microcement walls are fully waterproof — ideal for bathrooms, shower enclosures and kitchen splashbacks where water contact is constant.
Textured or Smooth
The applicator can trowel microcement to different levels of smoothness. Heavier trowel marks create a textured artisan look; polished application gives a near-smooth contemporary finish.
Applied Over Existing Tiles
Microcement goes directly over existing bathroom or kitchen wall tiles — no removal required. This dramatically speeds up renovations and reduces cost.
Easy to Clean
A damp cloth is all you need. Sealed microcement walls resist staining and wipe clean without specialist products.
Floor-to-Wall Continuity
Carry the same microcement colour from floor to wall to ceiling for a seamless envelope effect. This is particularly dramatic in bathrooms and wet rooms.
Wall Applications
Living Room Feature Wall
A microcement feature wall in a living room creates a sophisticated focal point. Applied in a warm neutral like Sandstone or a deep tone like Wengé, it provides texture and depth that painted walls cannot achieve. No frame, no panel — just material.
Bathroom Wall to Floor
The most popular wall application in Ireland. Microcement flows from the bathroom floor up the walls and into the shower enclosure as a single material. The absence of grout lines and transitions is what gives designer bathrooms their distinctive look.
Kitchen Splashback
Behind the hob and above the worktop, a microcement splashback is sealed with an epoxy coat for heat and grease resistance. Far easier to clean than tiled splashbacks and visually cleaner with no grout lines to discolour.
Hallway Walls
Hallway walls take the most knocks of any surface in the house. Microcement, once sealed, resists scuffs and marks well and wipes clean. Combined with a microcement hallway floor, it creates a seamless entrance that makes an immediate impression.
How Microcement Is Applied to Walls
Surface Preparation
Walls are inspected, cleaned and any damaged areas repaired. Loose paint or unstable surfaces must be removed. The wall is then sanded or abraded for adhesion.
Priming
A specialist primer is applied by roller to the entire wall. In wet areas, a waterproof additive is incorporated. The primer bonds the microcement to the wall substrate.
Microcement Coats
A scratch coat is applied first with a trowel, then smoothed. Two finish coats follow, each applied and worked with a steel trowel. The applicator controls the texture at this stage.
Sealing
Once fully dry (24-48 hours), the wall is sealed with one or two coats of polyurethane or epoxy sealant. The choice of sealant determines the final sheen level.
