Microcement Bathroom Ireland – Seamless Wet Room Finish

Waterproof, grout-free and beautifully seamless. Microcement bathrooms and wet rooms are Ireland's most popular microcement application.

Microcement Bathrooms in Ireland

The bathroom is the most popular application for microcement across Ireland, and it is easy to understand why. Microcement transforms a bathroom from a functional space into a designer statement — eliminating grout lines, creating a continuous surface from floor to wall and delivering a finish that feels genuinely luxurious. Whether you are fitting a compact en-suite in a Dublin apartment or a full wet room in a coastal Cork home, microcement gives you a result that tiles simply cannot match.

At Cementec Ireland, we supply factory-prepared microcement specifically formulated for wet environments. Our bathroom-grade product is designed to work with the correct primer and polyurethane sealant system to deliver full waterproofing — not just water resistance. The result is a surface that can withstand daily use in a shower or wet room for many years.

We recommend all bathroom microcement projects to certified Cementec applicators. Correct application technique — particularly the sealing process — is what determines whether a bathroom performs well for 20 years or develops problems within a year. Our applicators are trained to get this right.

Why Choose Microcement for Your Bathroom?

No Grout — Ever

Grout harbours bacteria, mould and limescale. Microcement eliminates grout entirely, creating a single continuous surface that is hygienic, easy to clean and stays looking pristine for years.

Fully Waterproof

When sealed with a polyurethane sealant, microcement is fully waterproof and suitable for shower enclosures, wet room floors, walls and all other wet areas. This is not a water-resistant coating — it is genuinely waterproof.

Any Colour, Any Finish

With 22 standard colours and the ability to trowel to different texture levels, microcement gives you design freedom that tile ranges cannot match. From pure white to deep charcoal to warm sandstone.

Thin Overlay Over Existing Tiles

At just 2-3 mm thick, microcement can be applied directly over your existing tiles. No tile removal, no skip hire, no weeks of dusty disruption. Your bathroom can be transformed in a matter of days.

Seamless Floor-to-Wall Continuity

Carry the same finish from the floor up the walls and into the shower without any transition strips or visible joints. This continuity makes any bathroom feel larger and more coherent.

Long Lifespan

A properly sealed microcement bathroom lasts 15-20 years with normal use. Maintenance is simple: a pH-neutral cleaner and a reseal every few years in high-usage shower areas.

Microcement Shower Rooms and Wet Rooms

The walk-in shower and wet room are the most design-led spaces in the modern Irish home — and microcement is the finish that defines them. A wet room with microcement floors and walls is a completely different experience from a tiled shower: it feels more spacious, more expensive and far easier to maintain.

Our shower-grade microcement system includes a tanking membrane stage to ensure absolute waterproofing behind the microcement layer. This belt-and-braces approach means your shower or wet room will perform flawlessly even after years of daily use.

The Bathroom Application Process

01

Substrate Preparation

Existing tiles or surfaces are assessed, cleaned and any defects repaired. Loose tiles are secured or removed. A moisture test is carried out.

02

Priming and Tanking

A specialist primer is applied to improve adhesion. In shower areas, a waterproof tanking membrane is applied before microcement for belt-and-braces waterproofing.

03

Microcement Coats

A scratch coat is applied first, followed by 2 finish coats of microcement, each 0.5-1 mm thick. The applicator uses a steel trowel to build up the characteristic smooth texture.

04

Sealant

Two coats of polyurethane sealant are applied to provide full waterproofing and durability. An anti-slip additive is mixed into the floor sealant. The bathroom is ready after 5-7 days.

Colours for Microcement Bathrooms

We offer 22 standard colours. For bathrooms, these are the most frequently chosen:

Off White
Arctic Grey
Pearl Grey
Sand
Sandstone
Marengo Grey

All 22 colours available. Custom colours for orders of 200 m2 or more.

Bathroom Cost Guide

Microcement bathroom costs in Ireland range from approximately 80 to 150 euros per m2 installed, depending on complexity, the number of surfaces being coated and the condition of the existing substrate.

  • Small shower room (6-8 m2)1,500 – 3,500 euros
  • Medium bathroom (8-12 m2)2,500 – 5,000 euros
  • Large bathroom / wet room (12-20 m2)4,000 – 9,000 euros

Can It Go Over Existing Tiles?

Yes — and this is one of the most compelling reasons to choose microcement for a bathroom renovation. Because microcement is only 2-3 mm thick, it can go directly over your existing ceramic or porcelain tiles, saving:

  • The cost of hiring tile removal contractors
  • Skip hire and disposal of old tiles
  • Days or weeks of disruption to your bathroom
  • The risk of damaging the substrate during tile removal

The tiles must be firmly fixed (no hollow spots), clean and primed correctly. Loose or cracked tiles must be repaired or removed before microcement can be applied over them.

Maintaining Your Microcement Bathroom

Microcement bathrooms are low-maintenance by nature — no grout to scrub, no joints to regrout, no complicated cleaning products. Here is how to keep your microcement bathroom looking its best:

Daily Cleaning

A damp cloth or mop with a pH-neutral cleaner is all you need. Rinse well and dry with a soft cloth or squeegee after showers to prevent water spots.

Avoid Bleach and Acids

Never use bleach, vinegar, lemon juice or acid-based cleaners on microcement. These can break down the sealant over time. Use dedicated microcement-safe cleaning products.

Reseal Every 3-5 Years

In a heavily used shower or wet room, the top coat of sealant may need to be refreshed every 3-5 years. This is a straightforward process and does not require full re-application of microcement.

Address Chips Promptly

If a small chip or scratch occurs, it can be spot-repaired by a qualified applicator. Prompt repair prevents moisture getting beneath the sealant layer.
