How to Clean and Maintain Microcement
Keep your microcement looking perfect for years. Daily cleaning, what to avoid, stain removal and resealing schedule from Cementec Ireland.
Direct Answer
Use a pH-neutral cleaner and soft mop. Avoid bleach, acids and abrasive cleaners. Reseal floors every 3-5 years in commercial use or 7-10 years in residential use. Bathroom wet areas should be resealed every 5-7 years to maintain waterproofing and protection.
Daily Cleaning Routine for Microcement
Microcement is one of the easiest floor and wall surfaces to clean and maintain. The seamless, grout-free surface has no channels for dirt to accumulate and can be cleaned thoroughly in a single pass. For daily routine cleaning, sweep or vacuum to remove loose dirt and grit, then clean with a diluted pH-neutral cleaner and a soft microfibre mop. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry.
In bathroom wet areas, a quick wipe-down after use with a soft cloth or squeegee significantly extends the life of the sealant and prevents soap scum and limescale deposits from building up. Hard water areas like many parts of Ireland can cause limescale deposits on microcement over time. A pH-neutral limescale remover can be used periodically to address this — but only if it is confirmed pH-neutral. Acid-based descalers will damage the sealant.
What to Avoid
The following products and practices will damage microcement sealant and should be avoided: bleach and chlorine-based disinfectants, acid-based cleaners (including vinegar, lemon juice and many bathroom cleaners), alkaline cleaners with a pH above 10, abrasive scrubbing pads or steel wool, pressure washing (on floors), and any cleaning product containing wax or furniture polish (which will make the surface slippery).
Resealing Schedule
The resealing schedule depends on use intensity. A simple water drop test will tell you when resealing is needed — if drops of water absorb into the surface rather than beading, the sealant has worn and it is time to reseal. Resealing is carried out by a certified applicator using the appropriate Cementec sealant for the application type.
Maintenance Summary
Daily Cleaning
pH-neutral cleaner and soft microfibre mop. Rinse with clean water. Squeegee wet areas after use.
What to Avoid
No bleach, acids, alkaline cleaners, abrasive pads or wax products. These damage the sealant layer.
Stain Removal
Fresh stains: blot and clean with pH-neutral product. Dried stains: allow cleaner to dwell before gentle cleaning.
Furniture Protection
Fit felt pads under all furniture legs. Use area rugs in high-footfall zones. Avoid dragging furniture.
Water Drop Test
Water beads on the surface: sealant is performing. Water absorbs into surface: time to reseal.
Resealing
Residential floors: 7-10 years. Bathroom wet areas: 5-7 years. Commercial floors: 3-5 years.
