Microcement durability depends on two distinct components: the microcement material itself, and the sealant layer that protects it. The microcement, once fully cured, is an extremely durable cement-based material that will last the lifetime of the building in normal conditions. The sealant is a protective film that wears with use and UV exposure over time and requires periodic reapplication — this is routine maintenance, not a sign of failure.

The quality of the original installation is the single biggest determinant of long-term performance. Correct substrate preparation, properly applied base coats and a correctly specified and applied sealant system creates a microcement installation that will perform reliably for decades. Poor installation — inadequate substrate preparation, incorrect sealant specification or insufficient sealant coats — will lead to premature failure regardless of how well the surface is subsequently maintained.

Microcement vs Tiles: Long-Term Comparison

Microcement and quality ceramic or porcelain tiles have comparable surface lifespans. However, tiled bathrooms and kitchens typically start showing their age significantly earlier because grout lines deteriorate, crack and discolour. Grout failure is one of the most common reasons homeowners renovate bathrooms that are only 8-12 years old. Microcement, with no grout lines, sidesteps this issue entirely. The absence of grout maintenance is one of the key long-term practical advantages of microcement over tiles.
