Professional microcement wall application

Can You DIY Microcement?

Honest advice on DIY microcement in Ireland. Why professional installation matters and what to do instead of attempting it yourself.

Direct Answer

Microcement application requires professional training and is not recommended as a DIY project. Incorrect substrate preparation, application technique or sealing leads to cracking, delamination and water ingress that is costly to repair. Always engage a certified Cementec applicator.

Why Microcement is Not DIY-Friendly

Microcement is one of the most visually impressive interior finishes available, and this visibility can make it seem appealing as a DIY project for confident home renovators. The reality is that microcement application is a professional skill that takes considerable time and supervised practice to develop. The most critical aspects — substrate assessment and preparation, achieving consistent thin-coat application, and correct sealant application — are not intuitive and cannot be learned from a YouTube video.

Substrate preparation requires a moisture meter to check substrate moisture content, skill in identifying hollow or unsound areas by tapping, an understanding of which primer to use for which substrate, and experience in recognising contamination that will prevent adhesion. Miss any of these steps and the entire installation will fail, regardless of how well the microcement itself is applied.

Finish coat application at 0.5mm is the hardest part. An experienced applicator develops a consistent trowel pressure, speed and angle through hours of supervised practice that creates a flat, even surface free of trowel lines, drag marks and lap joints. A first-time applicator will almost inevitably produce visible defects that detract significantly from the finish quality.

The True Cost of DIY Microcement Failure

The cost of remediating a failed DIY microcement installation is typically higher than the cost of a professional installation from the start. The microcement must be fully removed, the substrate assessed and repaired, and a new system applied from scratch. In a bathroom where water ingress has occurred due to inadequate sealing, the remediation may also involve addressing water damage to the substrate and surrounding structure. This is not a theoretical risk — it is the most common call we receive to our technical support line.

Common DIY Microcement Failures

Cracking

Caused by substrate movement not addressed, over-thick coat application, or working over a damp substrate. Requires full removal to fix.

Delamination

Microcement lifts from substrate due to incorrect primer, moisture in the substrate, or contamination. Results in hollow-sounding patches.

Water Ingress

Inadequate or incorrectly applied sealant allows water to penetrate. Causes staining, structural damage and mould. Expensive to remediate.

Uneven Colour

Inconsistent application technique causes areas of different colour and texture density. Very noticeable in finished room.

Lap Marks

Joining wet sections to dry sections causes visible lines. Requires professional skill to avoid when working across large areas.

Sealant Milking

Applying sealant before microcement is fully dry causes a cloudy white discolouration (blushing) that cannot be reversed without reapplication.
