Is Microcement Slippery?
Understanding microcement slip resistance — anti-slip additives, textured finishes and where specification matters most.
Direct Answer
Standard microcement with gloss or satin sealant can be slippery when wet. For wet rooms, showers, pool areas and exterior spaces, always specify an anti-slip additive in the sealant or choose a textured finish. Correctly specified microcement is safe in all these environments.
Microcement Slip Resistance: The Full Picture
Microcement's slip resistance is entirely determined by the sealant specification — the microcement material itself has minimal influence. A smooth gloss or satin sealant creates a surface that can be slippery when wet, comparable to a polished tile or sealed stone. A sealant with anti-slip additive, or a textured microcement finish, significantly increases grip and makes the surface safe in wet conditions.
For any wet area installation — showers, bath floors, wet rooms, wet changing rooms, pool surrounds, outdoor terraces — anti-slip specification is not optional. It is a safety requirement and, in commercial and public settings, a legal requirement under Irish and UK building regulations. Our certified applicators are trained to correctly specify and apply anti-slip treatment, and all Cementec commercial wet area specifications include this as standard.
Anti-Slip Additive
Anti-slip additive is a fine aggregate (typically aluminium oxide) mixed into the sealant before application. Different quantities and particle sizes achieve different slip resistance values. Light anti-slip is appropriate for domestic bathroom and shower floors. Medium anti-slip suits wet room floors, changing rooms and covered outdoor terraces. Heavy anti-slip is specified for pool surrounds, unprotected outdoor surfaces and commercial wet areas with high traffic.
Textured Microcement Finishes
Our Sand and Rustic textured microcement finishes provide inherent grip that reduces the need for heavy anti-slip additive in domestic settings. These finishes are popular for spa floors, wet rooms and bathroom floors where texture contributes positively to the aesthetic as well as providing safety. The texture does not impede cleaning — the surface is still seamless and easy to mop.
Anti-Slip Specification by Application
Domestic Shower Floor
Light anti-slip additive in sealant. Minimum requirement for all domestic shower installations.
Wet Room Floor
Medium anti-slip additive or textured finish. Essential for all wet room floor specifications.
Bathroom Floor (Dry Area)
Light anti-slip or satin finish sealant. Not wet, but grip still important for barefoot use.
Pool Surrounds
Heavy anti-slip additive. High exposure to water and constant wet footfall requires maximum slip resistance.
Exterior Terraces
Exterior anti-slip sealant. UV stable with appropriate grip rating for outdoor use in Irish rain.
Commercial Wet Areas
Specify to meet BS 8300 PTV 36 minimum for wet conditions. Document sealant specification for compliance records.
