Why Microcement is Perfect for Irish Wet Rooms

The wet room concept — a fully waterproofed open shower space with no enclosure, tray or screen — has become one of the most aspirational bathroom designs in Irish homes. Microcement and the wet room are a natural pairing because microcement is the only finish material that can create a truly continuous, joint-free surface from the floor up the walls to the ceiling, with no grout lines, no silicone beads and no visible joins of any kind.

In Ireland's hard water areas — much of the east and midlands of the country — grout maintenance in wet rooms is a persistent challenge. Limescale deposits in grout channels, mould growth in silicone joints and the general difficulty of keeping white grout looking clean are issues that every tiled wet room owner eventually faces. Microcement eliminates all of these problems. The smooth, sealed surface resists limescale adhesion and can be cleaned with a squeegee and a pH-neutral spray in a matter of seconds.

Floor drainage is a critical consideration in wet room design. Point drains are also compatible with microcement but require more complex multi-directional sloping. The drain position and type should be agreed between the homeowner, the plumber and the microcement applicator before any work begins, as the drain installation precedes microcement application.
