Professional microcement application process

How to Apply Microcement

A complete step-by-step application guide for certified Cementec applicators. Substrate prep, coatings, drying times and sealant application.

The Complete Microcement Application Process

This guide covers the complete Cementec microcement application process for trained professionals. It is not intended for DIY application — microcement requires professional training at every stage, and errors in substrate preparation or application technique lead to failures that are expensive to remediate. If you are a homeowner, engage a certified Cementec applicator.

Stage 1: Substrate Assessment and Preparation

Assess the substrate for structural soundness, moisture content (use a moisture meter — readings above 4% require remediation), surface level and existing coatings. Significant irregularities must be addressed with self-levelling compound before applying primer. For a full guide see our Substrate Preparation page.

Stage 2: Primer Application

Apply the appropriate Cementec primer for the substrate type — tile primer, concrete primer and plywood primer are different products. Apply evenly with a roller and allow to dry fully (2-4 hours) before proceeding. Priming is critical for adhesion and must not be skipped.

Stage 3: Scratch Coat

Apply the Cementec scratch coat at 1-1.5mm using a stainless steel trowel. Embed reinforcement mesh at stress points — internal corners and over expansion joints. Allow 24 hours to cure before lightly sanding and proceeding to finish coats.

Stage 4: Finish Coats

Apply two finish coats at approximately 0.5mm each using thin, consistent passes. Lightly sand with a 100-grit sanding sponge between coats once fully dry, then remove all dust. Allow 24 hours between coats.

Stage 5: Sealant Application

Once the second finish coat is fully dry and sanded, apply the first coat of sealant. Use the appropriate Cementec sealant for the application zone. Apply thin, even coats with a foam roller. Allow each coat to dry fully before applying the next. Minimum two coats for residential dry areas, three for wet areas.

Common Application Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping Substrate Assessment

Never skip moisture testing. An undetected damp problem will cause failure regardless of application quality.

Wrong Primer Type

Using the wrong primer for the substrate compromises adhesion. Match tile primer to tiles, concrete primer to concrete.

Finish Coats Too Thick

Applying finish coats too thick is a common error. Thin 0.5mm passes are essential for a flat, crack-free result.

Skipping Sanding

Light sanding between finish coats is essential to remove surface tack and ensure the next coat bonds correctly.

Sealing Too Soon

The finish coat must be fully dry before sealant is applied. Sealing a damp surface causes adhesion failure.

Too Few Sealant Coats

One coat of sealant in a wet area is insufficient. Always apply the correct number of coats for the application type.
